UBC Extended Learning
The English Language Institute (ELI) has welcomed thousands of students to its non-credit, English-as-a-second-language programs since it first opened in 1969. Our experienced, well-qualified teachers have specialized training in teaching English to speakers of other languages.
Our English for Academic Purposes is a 16-week, full-time program available in three levels, from intermediate to proficiency. Students completing three courses at any level receive a UBC Certificate in English Language.
Students interested in the UBC Conditional Admission Program (for academically outstanding students who do not yet meet the UBC English Language Admission Standard) can apply to be accepted into a UBC degree program on the condition that they advance their English skills to the required standard by participating in the academic stream of the Intensive English Program.
Other full- and part-time programs are available for students who wish to focus on English Language and Culture, English and University Culture, English for Business Communications, or English for English Teachers. ESL in-service teachers can enhance their skills through our UBC Certificate in Advanced English Language Teaching (recognized by TESL-Canada). Customized programs can also be developed for academic or professional groups with specific English training requirements.
