The Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies is pleased to welcome you to the Centre de la Francophonie de UBC.
The presence of French at UBC dates back to the university’s foundation in 1915. Be it in the Department of Modern Languages (1915-1946), the Department of French (1946-56 and 1967-1998), the Department of Romance Studies (1956-1967), or the Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies (since 1998), our professors have consistently upheld a tradition of excellence in the research and teaching of francophone language, linguistics, literature and culture.
Each year, we welcome thousands of students eager to learn the language of Molière, to broaden their knowledge, to pursue an undergraduate specialisation (Minor, Major or Honours), or to complete a graduate degree (MA and PhD).
Through the creation of the Centre de la Francophonie de UBC in partnership with the Faculty of Education and UBC Continuing Studies, the Department of French, Hispanic & Italian Studies seeks to promote, among students and the community, the importance of French as a language which consolidates identity in Canada, and which also unifies all those who share an interest in the numerous countries that constitute the larger francophone family.
